Wiki (MediaWiki)

It looks like the plan is to install MediaWiki 1.6.10 unless somebody offers up an alternative.

I'm in favour of a wiki here instead of using Wikia - we have a scratchpad wiki there:
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/FreeTrain

From my experience, Wikia tends to change the way it looks quite frequently, affecting the wiki layout. It's also got quite prominent ads. The benefit to being on Wikia is the hosting may be a bit quicker and FreeTrain would get small exposure amongst the Wikia community, but I think that's something we can achieve by listing FreeTrain in the right places anyway.

Website Integration

The Vega Strike guys have done a reasonable job of integrating their web software:
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums/ (phpBB2)
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/wiki/ (MediaWiki)
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/devblog/ (Wordpress)
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/gallery (Gallery2)

The only thing they haven't integrated is Wordpress. The wiki and forums use the same logins. The whole site uses the same style although how much of it is shared and how much is in templates specific to each piece of software is another matter. Anyway I've asked them for some pointers.

For reference I'm collecting the installation experience here:
http://wiki.freegamedev.net/index.php/Sourceforge

Do we need a gallery? I have successfully set up the wiki so it accepts image uploads, and we can add attachments here. Does Gallery2 offer enough features to warrant installing it?

What about a bug tracker? The Sourceforge one is horrible to use. We could use Launchpad (which is quite nice) or perhaps install another here.

Re: Website Integration

Ok, having a quick look at phpBB/MediaWiki integration and the first thing I found:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension ... ntegration

Looks useful but information is sparse on how likely this is to work with the phpBB3 / MediaWiki 1.6.10 combo.

Another alternative is to use OpenID logins for MediaWiki:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID

However I favour the combined wiki/forum login so will pursue that.

Re: Website Integration

Here's one but it's MediaWiki 1.9.x and higher:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 6&t=578123

Here's another, this time for MediaWiki 1.6.x, but it's no longer actively developed/maintained:

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Another alternative is DokuWiki: which comes with the ability to
http://www.splitbrain.org/projects/dokuwiki

Here is a guide to integration with phpBB3:
http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:tips:in ... ith_phpbb3

The downside (?) to DokuWiki is it uses file based storage and since we are restricted with web space that may be a bad thing.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

My vote is for Mediawiki. I use it on the SdlDotNet site in conjunction with phpBB.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Did you integrate it or just install it side-by-side? I'm aiming for a setup where you register for the forum and that gives you access to the wiki too.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

You can integrate them. There are modules/code that will allow phpBB to use Mediawiki usernames/passwords. You my want to search the phpbb boards for one.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Indeed I have seen a few (see the integration thread) but the problem is that Sourceforge only supports php4 which restricts us to using MediaWiki 1.6.x, and most of the integration modules target 1.9.x or higher.

Re: Website Integration

I'm asking here if the 'official' integration (official as in noted on the MediaWiki site) can be made to work with MediaWiki 1.6.x. Here's to hoping.

We can't just install the latest version of MediaWiki?

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Nope, it requires PHP5 and Sourceforge only supports PHP4, so it has to be 1.6.10 which is the last MediaWiki to support PHP4.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Hi Charles,

You may want to look at this page: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Ru ... eforge.net to install MediaWiki. I uploaded 1.6.10 and tried to install it but I do not have permissions over some of the directories (namely /tmp/persistent/freetrain).

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Yes, I have that link already. I was going to integrate the wiki with the forum - that is, share the logins.

However if you guys really want the wiki up now, I can install it anyway without the integration.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

I don't think there is a huge hurry. I say wait until you have the integration ready to go. It is better to have it correct at the get-go raqther than having to try to integrate them afterward.

Well there's other people pushing for it too and a bit more info here:

(That's the support forum for the official phpBB integration extension for MediaWiki)

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Sourceforge are upgrading to PHP5 soon. (Was supposed to happen yesterday but they delayed.) When that's done, I'll install and integrate MediaWiki. Then I'll try and get some interest in moving forward with the SDL branch.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

Well Sourceforge now offers "Hosted Apps" including MediaWiki and phpBB so I'll have a look into that.

It'll be difficult to transition this forum across as the login IDs will be your Sourceforge.net IDs.

Re: Wiki (MediaWiki)

You get a horrid big orange banner over the wiki/forum for Hosted Apps. There may or may not be a CSS remedy.

MediaWiki looks like this and phpBB like this.
