FreeTrain Railways

It seems development of Japanese FreeTrain has recently been resumed under the name FreeTrain Railways. Apparently, signals are getting an overhaul, as well as other features. Details are sparse at the time of writing. There are a few videos linked from the pukiwiki page at kohsuke.org.

Re: FreeTrain Railways

Daniel, have you had any success getting in touch with them?

Are they using a public SVN server?

Steven, if you look closely at the login message, you'll see that they give away that information. ;) It's apparently a spam-bot fighting measure.

Charlie, not quite yet. I'm planning to post a comment at the pukiwiki page. AFAICT, it's currently a one-man effort and the guy is keeping everything on his local drive.

Re: FreeTrain Railways

In that case, we really do need to get him involved here so we can get the work 1) backed up in SVN and 2) accessible to everybody else and 3) not splinter development of the game.

Daniel is away for the next month, is it possible that you could ask these guys, Steve?

Re: FreeTrain Railways

We are the ones that have splintered development!
I can try and get in touch with the author and see what they are up to, but I don't really recommend them coming over to our 'team' straight away..
We have a long way to go with the SDL port... Dave has done some great work with the framework, etc... but the actual game itself doesn't run anywhere near the way it should... i.e. the way I've implemented the original classes into the SDL framework (QuarterViewDrawer and stuff) is ... damaging to gameplay and it all needs a lot of optimising (which means a lot of time consuming research into how the code actually functions) before we say "come and join us". :?

Re: FreeTrain Railways

I mean more to get them using our SVN (if they don't have SVN) or merging their changes into the stable version.

I wonder how hard it would be to merge the translation changes into trunk from the FreeTrainSDL branch - is it dependent on or mixed with the SDL code at all?

Re: FreeTrain Railways

Easy... just time consuming...
The translation.cs file can be copied directly over, as well as the resource files in core and then one just needs to go through all the strings and reference the proper resource.

Re: FreeTrain Railways

My thought being that if we had a localized version of the Windows-only FreeTrain then we could better coordinate synchronization or a merger with the FreeTrain Railways code,..

What do you guys think?

Re: FreeTrain Railways

I have to say that "FreeTrain Railways" is not development project but the attempt to enhance other players activity or cheering up development by sharing play data or posting screenshots and movies.
Of cause the new signal system introduced in that page is most recent progress but is not equal to the director of FreeTrain Railways. I have contact with the director, but not yet with the developer of new signal. He has posted binary codes only.
